Informatik Centrum Dortmund e.V.

ICD logo

ICD is a technology transfer centre that was founded in 1989. The goal of ICD is to facilitate the transfer of new research results from academia to industry. ICD cooperates with various groups within the departments of electrical engineering and computer science. ICD provides a common infrastructure to help these groups in an industrial environment and to act as an incubator. The headcount is currently at about 15 group employees. Work at ICD is focussing on three overlapping areas: communication/multimedia, software/information technology and embedded systems. The embedded systems group ICD/ES at ICD is a software tool supplier for embedded systems. ICD/ES offers custom tool solutions for embedded software design, ranging from signal processing to automotive applications. The tool development service covers the entire tool chain, from highly efficient C compilers down to fast cycle-true processor simulators. ICD/ES provides compilers, optimizers, assemblers, simulators, and debuggers ICD/ES handles DSPs, RISC, ASIP and microcontroller architectures. Major customers include TÜV, Infineon, ELMOS and previously also Systemonics (Dresden; now part of Philips). Work at ICD/ES is frequently based on the research work at the embedded systems group at TU Dortmund, headed by Peter Marwedel. The group is a core team member of the European ArtistDesign NoE, and affiliated with the Hipeac NoE. The work of the group focuses on code generation techniques for embedded systems and is known as a leading group in this area. Since the memory is expected to become more and more a bottleneck, the group addresses this “memory wall” problem and shows that a suitable combination of compiler and architecture design techniques can lead to fast, energy- efficient and timing-predictable memory interfaces.

ICD e.V. is an independent membership corporation comprising about 20 members, chaired by Prof. Dr. Heinrich Müller. Regulations for non non-profit organizations apply. The board of ICD comprises: Prof. Dr. Peter Marwedel (Chair, CS Department), Dr. Rudolf Felix (Finances, also heading the company FLS), Prof. Dr. Rüdiger Kays (Vice Chair, EE Department). ICD is located within the famous technology park of Dortmund.
