The Faculty of Science at the UvA is one of Europe's foremost institutions of higher education and research in its chosen fields of specialization. It plays an active role in international science networks and collaborates with universities and industry. The Faculty has approximately 2,000 students and 1,500 staff members spread over four departments and ten research institutes. Each institute has its own research programme, a substantial part of which is externally funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), the Dutch government, the EU and various private enterprises.

The Computer Systems Architecture (CSA) group from UvA’s Faculty of Science is tackling significant problems spanning compilers, computer architecture and implementations as systems on a chip. More specifically, research is performed in two main areas. First, we are studying and developing new system architectures that are completely scalable in area, performance and power. Second, the CSA group also investigates and develops methods, techniques and tools for the system-level analysis of (future) system-on- chip based computer architectures. This work focuses on architectural design space exploration during the very early stages of design, where design decisions have great impact on (the success of) the final product. To this end, we study both analytical modelling methods as well as simulation methods for system-level (performance) analysis.

The CSA group employs around 10 PhD students, and has a staff of one full professor, one associate professor, and one assistant professor.
